What is Deionization?
Deionization is a chemical process that removes mineral ions (electrically charged particles) from water, including calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate, and bicarbonate. These ions are typically responsible for water hardness and conductivity. By removing them, deionization ensures the water is highly purified, making it ideal for applications where water quality is critical. Deionized (DI) water is a necessary ingredient for hundreds of processes across a variety of industries.
To ensure a steady supply of DI water, Fact Water provides Service Deionization (SDI) and bottle delivery services.
Service Deionization (SDI) and DI Bottles
DI bottles (sometimes called DI Tanks, Mixed-beds, resin bottles, ion-exchange bottles, etc.), are containers of ion-exchange resin that can be used for deionization. Water is passed through the bottle and most of the dissolved solids are removed, leading to a more desirable process water.
Eventually the resin in DI bottles will become exhausted and need to be regenerated. With Service Deionization, there’s no need for a facility to worry about regenerating their own resin. Fact Water simply brings new, fresh DI bottles and takes the spent ones back to be regenerated at our regeneration plant, ensuring a constant supply of DI water.
How is Resin Regenerated?
Resin regeneration is done with hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide, depending on the type of resin. For a mixed-bed, which results in the highest purity water, the resin must be removed from the bottle, separated, then treated individually before being mixed back together for use again in the field. A mixed-bed bottle consists of a Strong Base Anion resin, which removes the anions (negatively charged ions) from the water and replaces them with a hydroxide ion (OH-), and a Strong Acid Cation resin, which removes the cations (positively charged ions) from the water and replaces them with a hydrogen ion (H+).
The hydroxyl and hydrogen ion then combine to form water molecules (H+ + OH-
⟶ ⟶
H20), resulting in high purity water. The contaminants remain on the resin until the bottles are exchanged and the material is regenerated.
At Fact Water’s in-house regeneration plant, we are able to regenerate and/or re-bed all of the different types of bottles, including mixed-bed resin. Our network of warehousing and delivery teams allow us to provide quick turnaround times and excellent customer service. This deionized water bottle delivery service means a consistent stream of ultra-pure water for you, with very little hassle and a plan that fits your specific needs.
